Charles Brownlow: the man, the legacy
All members in attendance enjoyed the conversational style of presentation Tony and Bob used to illuminate different aspects of Charles Brownlow’s life and character. We read about and view the presentation of the prestigious Charles Browlow’s medal as the AFL’s recognition of the season’s Best and Fairest player.
Seldom do we understand and appreciate the character and background of the man. At best, we known he was involved with the Geelong Football Club.
Tony’s and Bob’s informative presentation helped us to appreciate the values, work ethic, and accomplishments of the individual so highly esteemed by both the VFL and Geelong community. All were surprised by the many Geelong sports in which he was involved in an administrative capacity. Few knew of his philanthropic support to many local organisations, including the Kitchener Hospital in Geelong. We were told about his elite football skills and personal relationships with his players as a fellow player and their captain.
Bob drew on his enormous personal collection of Charles Brownlow’s correspondence and memorabilia to give an insight to Brownlow’s personal life and character. Bob brought along a copy of the letter of condolence, from the VFL on his passing, to Charles Browlow’s family, which informed them of the establishment of the Brownlow Medal as the League’s Best and Fairest Player.
Those who attended the presentation now have a deeper understanding of the man behind the Brownlow medal and shall appreciate the significance of his medal as the preeminent recognition of excellence that the AFL bestows upon its players.
We wish Tony and Bob the best of luck with the completion of their book about Charles Browlow. I’m certain that it will be a huge success and many Society members will want to purchase it.
