At our August 6 meeting, Padraic Fisher, the Director of the National Wool Museum, delivered an engaging presentation – “A Museum of and for Geelong.” His talk outlined the Museum’s evolving vision as a dynamic civic institution—one that not only preserves Geelong’s rich heritage but also invites active public engagement with its present and future.
Padraic emphasized the Museum’s core themes: First Peoples’ living cultures, local distinctiveness, wool and textiles, Geelong’s designation as a UNESCO City of Design, and a commitment to ethical and sustainable practice. He highlighted the Museum’s role as a cultural hub, encompassing the Dennys Lascelles Woolstore, the Heritage Carousel, and the City’s Art and Heritage Collections, which together house over 25,000 objects.
The presentation showcased current and upcoming exhibitions, including We the Makers – Sustainable Fashion Prize and Quilts, Wool, Use, as well as a forthcoming display on the Design Legacy of Godfrey Hirst. Fisher also discussed the Museum’s redevelopment plans and its outreach efforts, noting that nearly 1.7 million participants engage annually across onsite, online, and partner programs. He also highlighted the cost of maintenance of our heritage with reference to the 158 Bollards that are a very iconic symbol of our city – all are in dire need of repair with the annual cost exceeding $1,000 for each one!
Importantly, Padraic framed the Museum’s work within broader ethical and philosophical commitments—truth-telling, sustainability, and significance. He stressed the importance of transparency, cultural connection, and critical reflection in heritage practice, aligning with the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria’s call for honest historical storytelling. His presentation encouraged people to see the Museum not just as a repository of the past, but as a living, inclusive space for dialogue, creativity, and shared stewardship.
Padraic then challenged those present with a fun Quiz on the history of Geelong, complete with prizes and give-aways. Padraic kindly remained during supper and warmly engaged with members who peppered him with questions and observations. The society is most appreciative for his efforts on such a wintery night!
