State Library of Victoria: Reorganisation Proposal Withdrawn
Following our earlier article on the proposed reorganisation of the State Library of Victoria, we are pleased to share this update. (You can read our initial comments here.)
As reported in The Age, Christine Christian, outgoing chair of the Library’s Board, stated:
“After careful consideration of the feedback that we received during the entire consultation process – since September – we’ve decided to withdraw the reorganisation proposal.”
The Library acknowledged that “elements of the proposal created unintended concerns” and that withdrawing it will allow time to refine their approach to ensure it best supports the community, staff, and the Library’s long-term vision.
Importantly, the Library reaffirmed its commitment to evolving in response to new forms of digital access and contemporary learning, while remaining true to its core purpose:
“…supporting research, learning, public access to information and preserving Victoria’s treasures.”
This outcome reflects the value of community feedback and the importance of safeguarding the Library’s role as custodian of Victoria’s heritage. The Society is pleased that the government and the Library Board have listened to concerns and recognised the need to protect the institution’s strengths while planning for the future.
